Terrain Theory vs. Germ Theory

Updated: Mar 2

Germ theory refers that germs (microorganisms too small to be seen without the aid of a microscope) are the cause of many diseases. Microorganisms include bacteria, viruses, fungi, algae, and protozoa. The Germ Theory was developed by a French chemist named Louis Pasteur in the 1800’s. Terrain theory believes when the inner environment of a body or “terrain” of the cells and tissues are in a balanced state and contains all necessary components are present, then optimum health and balance is achieved.  If this balance is disrupted by illness, injury, or exposure to toxins, the body may become unbalanced, leading to ill health. Terrain theory emphasizes restoring balance (homeostasis) within the body at a cellular level as a way of promoting good health. The body can heal itself if all its foundations are in place. If the terrain is compromised, the sickened state of the body allows for internal conditions such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites to thrive in this habitat. Terrain theory is considered medically obsolete but, I believe it is more than relevant to obtain and maintain a healthy body inside and out as your best defense against becoming ill.

Good stewardship to your body is your duty!

As a Naturopath, the Terrain Theory is more relevant to me because it aligns with our core principles of promoting the Foundations of Health and puts the responsibility of health back into the client’s hands. The foundations of health are adequate quality of air, water, sunlight, exercise, rest, emotional stability, body and energy balance, and a connection to spirituality.

Life is not just something that happens to you. Life is what you make of it!
