Analyzing the Face, Tongue, and Fingernails using TCM concepts

Updated: Mar 2

Observing physical features helps us to attain a more cohesive understanding of the person in front of us. Through triangulation with other modalities and conversation, we are able to piece together our findings, or connect the dots, to best understand what is going on inside the body, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Physical observations are not intended to diagnose but guide us in our recommendations on how to best support the body in its constant conquest to stay in balance and heal. Each line, shape, feature, mark, and color that presents, in conjunction with location, is the body’s way of expressing what is going on within and what it has been through. Each feature has an emotional and/or physical meaning, and by looking at the face, tongue, skin, and nails, we can better pinpoint the most important areas of the body to address and support. To me, it’s a lot like reading a map, only instead of finding a destination, we are searching to uncover the root cause of an individual’s complaints, as well as the best practices for disease prevention.

According to TCM, the face, nails, and tongue relate to specific body systems. For example, the tongue can aid in triangulating things like digestive issues, fungal concerns, and organ deficiencies. Areas on the face relate to the organs, therefore various findings can reflect what may be going on with a given organ. Observing the nails is important because the meridians, or energy highways, of the body begin or end near the nails. Therefore, findings on a specific nail can indicate deficiencies with its matching meridian/organ. Looking at the nails can show things like vitamin and mineral deficiencies, health reserve levels, and circulation health. Overall, the purpose of looking at physical aspects paints a more comprehensive picture of an individual and their vitality.
