Exhaustion: Don't Let the Wrong Foods Rob You of Your Vital Energy!
by Rosetta Kawauchi, BS, CTN, RN
March 22, 2024
Due to the instant gratification of the culture of present society today, many people look to fill their nutritional needs by fast, prepared, processed foods. Junk food stimulates the body to act but, provides no nutrition to do so. The body gets flooded with toxins that are difficult if not impossible for the body to eliminate on its own. This causes the body to expend much of its reserve energy on attempting to break down and eliminate toxins instead of maintaining health, growth, and repair of organs and tissues.
The long- and short-term effects of consuming junk food are:
extra calories
obesity
high cholesterol
headache
dental problems
diabetes
heart problems
blood sugar spikes
digestive problem
fatigue and weakness
depression
kidney disease
liver damage
skin problems
This can lead to nutrient deficiency with iron and oxygen (the 2 frisky horses). This can cause signs of low vital force in the brain and nervous system, low blood pressure, anemia, slow speech, and melancholy.
Some foods that drain your energy are:
white bread, pasta, and rice
breakfast cereals, yogurts, and other foods with added sugar
alcohol
coffee
energy drinks
fried and fast foods
I would recommend strengthen the foundations and offer these food options that can maximize energy levels.
water
ginger
brown rice
oranges
spinach
almond butter
beans
quinoa
pistachios
avocado
pears
dark chocolate
plums
oatmeal
blueberries
sweet potato
broccoli
matcha
lemons
asparagus
chia seeds
pineapple
kale
banana
green tea
barley
olives
strawberries
walnuts

Melatonin Excess and Deficiencies
by Rosetta Kawauchi, BS, CTN, RN
February 22, 2024
Melatonin is a hormone produced by the Pineal Gland in response to darkness. The amount of light entering the eyes stimulates the suprachiasmatic nucleus which controls the release of Melatonin. Adequate Melatonin release causes the body to lower its temperature, resulting in feelings of sleepiness. This helps with regulation of the body’s circadian rhythm. Melatonin plays a role in the body’s antioxidant defenses and helps regulate cortisol levels, blood pressure, immune function, and sexual function.
Melatonin Deficiency Symptoms:
Insomnia
Restlessness
Lack of dreaming
Fatigue
Brain fog
Mood swings
Chronic exhaustion
Adrenal fatigue
Supporting foundations: air, diet, water, sunlight, exercise, rest, emotional stability, body and energy balance, and spirituality. Recommend turning off artificial light at night 2 hours before going to bed, like the computer, TV, or cell phone. Avoiding stimulants: coffee, chocolate, and caffeine. Avoid eating within 4 hours of sleeping. Allow fresh cool air to circulate where you plan on sleeping. Install a “blue light” blocker on your computer, cellphone, or glasses. Practice a nighttime relaxation ritual like reading a book, deep relaxing diaphragmatic breathing, and positive affirmations about themselves and what is good in their lives. Allow what cannot be changed to be “shelved” until the morning. Install room darkening curtains on the windows to block out the sunlight so you are not awakened too early in the morning. If one is not sleeping then, one is not healing.
Melatonin Excess Symptoms:
Season Affective Disorder (SAD)
Depression
Low energy
Inability to concentrate.
Brain fog
Daytime Tiredness
Chronic exhaustion
Overeating CHOs
Weight gain
I would advise clients to invest in a full spectrum light and expose themselves to it for 15 minutes a day in the morning. Sungazing during sunrise and sunset. Support foundations of air, diet, water, sunlight, exercise, rest, emotional stability, body and energy balance, and spirituality.

The Gut/ Brain Connection
by Rosetta Kawauchi, BS, CTN, RN
January 22, 2024
Maintaining a healthy digestive system gives the body the building blocks it needs to function properly. The brain and digestive system are connected. Ninety percent of the neurotransmitters are made in the small intestine. If one is not absorbing, assimilating (diarrhea) nutrients in the digestive tract toxins can be reabsorbed (constipation) resulting in mood swings and fatigue. If a healthy nutritional state is not maintained, hormonal imbalances can lead to poor sleep and reduced cognitive function. Maintaining a good healthy gut microbiota balance will help with GI motility, nervous system, endocrine, cardiovascular, and immune systems. Also, a healthy digestive system and a healthy diet can improve cognitive function, emotional/ psychological health improve vitality, improve mood, and reduce acne.
I can use my specialties as a Traditional Naturopath, Registered Nurse, CHHP, Clinical Homeopathic Specialist, Aromatherapy Specialist, and Master Herbalist to help support the foundations of health (air, water, diet, sunlight, exercise, rest, emotional stability, body and energy balance, and spirituality). I can recommend Herbal supplementation to address symptoms and areas of weakness that are identified during consultation. Education is the key!! Helping the client promote good stewardship to the body, mind, and spirit are essential!
